Microarchaeology and Mineral Identification

FTIR spectrometer

In the microarchaeology laboratory, we seek to understand the formation or archaeological deposits and address questions on human behavior from its sedimentary expression. We currently employ a set of equipment that allows us to obtain higher resolution data on the characterization of archeological materials and sediments.

Our equipment includes polarized light microscopy, with petrographic, polarized stereo microscopes and reflected light microscopy. We use Olympus series microscopes with acquisition and analytical Stream Motion software. In addition we have a series of biological microscopes available. Microscopic studies are integrated with FTIR and µFTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy) analyses with an Agilent 660 FTIR Spectrometer (Agilent Technologies) and a Cary 620 FTIR microscope with collections in transmission, reflection and attenuated total reflection modes.
