Radiocarbon Lab and Equipment

In our protocol, all samples are subject to the pretreatment published in Talamo and Richards 2011.

We use FTIR and stable isotopes to assess the bone collagen preservation.

Only after we have assessed the collagen preservation we send the samples to the Klaus-Tschira-AMS facility of the Curt-Engelhorn Centre in Mannheim, Germany for AMS measurements. This facility has a new accelerator run previously by Dr. Bernd Kromer and now by Dr. Ronny Friedrich. Importantly, this machine has a background age of 51.000 cal BP allowing to date samples very near to this limit.
