  Research and Work Experience

2001- 2003 Research Associate
LABS of Virginia, Inc. Division of Research and Development - Collection and analysis of data for NIH-funded research project examining the relationships among monoamines, hormones, behavior, and life history variables in free-ranging and captive Macaca mulatta. Additional work-related duties included manuscript preparation, physiological data collection, colony management of three primate species, assistance in surgical procedures for Aotus, and management of a behavioral project addressing cognitive aspects of tool use in Cebus apella. Supervisor for two Research Associates.
2000 University of Illinois Thesis Research – Collection of behavioral data June-July, 2000 on a rhesus monkey social group at LABS of Virginia, Inc. in Yemassee, SC. Data collection focused on male-infant and male-female interactions. Genetic paternity testing was completed in November, 2001 for the same group of animals at the University of Illinois, Dept. of Animal Sciences. Master’s Thesis completed and approved by committee April, 2001.
1999 University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign - Analysis of behavioral and radiotracking data with Dr. Paul Garber. Data were collected by Dr. Garber in Brazil during Spring 1999, as part of an ongoing project addressing questions of mixed species associations among wild populations of tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis, Saguinus labiatus and Callimico goeldii).
1998 College of Charleston – Analysis of Eocene perissodactyl fossils form The Great Divide Basin, Wyoming. Study with Dr. Dana Cope, College of Charleston. Hyracotherium and Homogalax fossils were analyzed for species identification, using both qualitative (development of the protoloph and metaloph on lower molars) and quantitative (statistical analyses) data. Species were then used to examine biostratigraphic implications by comparison with well documented stratigraphic sequences in the Clark’s Fork, Bighorn and Wind River Basins, Wyoming.
1997 Nicaragua – Field study of sex-based differences in activity patterns of mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) in dry tropical forest at Ometepe Biological Field Station, Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua.
1997 South Carolina – Group Formation Technician at LABS of Virginia in Yemassee, SC. Duties included the formation of social groups in three species of macaques (Macaca nemestrina, Macaca fascicularis, and Macaca mulatta) as well as one species of capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). Other job requirements included daily behavioral and medical observations, care of neonates, administration of psychopharmacological drugs, maintenance of group compositions and dominance hierarchies, and environmental enrichment.
1997 Wyoming – Field assistant in the Great Divide Basin Project, co-sponsored by SUNY-Geneseo and the College of Charleston. Late Paleocene and early Eocene mammal fossils were collected for three weeks in the Great Divide Basin, central Wyoming. Fossils collected cover a large variety of Paleocene and Eocene taxa, including plesiadapiforms, primates, perissodactyls, artiodactyls, condylarths and rodents.
1997 South Carolina – Internship at LABS of Virginia under the direction of Drs. Patrick Mehlman and David Taub. Requirements included mastery of all aspects of nonhuman primate husbandry, including animal care, research, behavioral care, and veterinary care. Additional requirements included behavioral data collection on free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) at Morgan Island, SC and tracking of animals using radio telemetry.
