Research Interests

I am a PhD student in the department of Human Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, and a member of the Archaeological Science Group under the supervision of Professor Mike Richards.

Broadly speaking, I am interested in the various factors that influenced the selection, transport, and utilization of lithic raw materials by Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans in the Middle and early Upper Palaeolithic. For my dissertation I will specifically address the issue of raw material procurement through the development and application of reliable methods, based primarily on stable isotope techniques, to the study of the provenance of chert artifacts.

My current research focuses on assessing the usefulness of various geochemical signatures, in particular stable isotope ratios of elements such as Sr and O, in discriminating between different raw material sources and outcrops within these.
