Research Interests

I am currently employed research fellow at MPI-EVA. My study is centered on the technical stone equipment of Paleolithic societies from the transitional Middle to Upper Paleolithic period (approx. between 35-47 Ky BP) in the Eastern Balkans (Bulgaria), and partially other areas as well (Zagros, Levant, Sinai). My field work focuses on finding and investigating/ re-excavating sites from Middle and Upper Paleolithic. I obtained my PhD from PACEA-IPGQ, University of Bordeaux 1 in France. My doctoral research (2006) contributed to the understanding of Initial/Early Upper Paleolithic cultures in North Bulgaria and established links with the known synchronous cultures of Levant, Central Europe and the northern Mediterranean perimeter.

My first post-doctoral project (2007-8), involved Early Upper Paleolithic Baradostian assemblages from Zagros Mountains (Iran) excavated in 1960s and housed in the US. Those lithic collections from the rock shelters of Warwasi and Yafteh cave in Central Zagros show initial development of bladelet projectiles technology presumably introduced by Modern human together with techno-typological component typical for the Mousterian. Baradostian assemblages are always located at the base of UP sequences and they are conceptually comparable to synchronous technocomplexes in Western Eurasia (Ahmarian from Levant and Sinai; Kozarnikian from Eastern Balkans, Protoaurignacian in Western and Central Europe etc.)

Since 2015 I am co-directing with N. Sirakov re-excavation in Bacho Kiro cave (North Bulgaria) in collaboration between EVA-MPI and NIAM-BAS, Sofia. We have uncovered preserved layers and stratigraphy from the Initial Upper Paleolithic (43-40 Uncal Ky BP) and early and middle stages of UP (40-30 Uncal Ky BP). Actually we are collecting new data from the richest IUP layer (ex. Layer 11- so-called Bachokirian).

My work consists of setting up projects, connecting the local and MPI teams, organizing field work and study sessions, excavating and studying the lithic material. Improvement of lithic study methodology (refits, microfractures, use-wear, lithic taphonomy...) and combining the results from the other fields (paleoanthropology, archeogeology, zooarcheology etc.) is used to reconstruction of the material culture and behavior of paleo societies.

My research has been published in Journal of Human evolution, British Archaeological Reports, ERAUL, Paléo, Quaternary International and some Bulgarian archaeological journals.
