Betoi-Sáliban: Evidence for a new South American language family
December 01, 2014 15:00
Speaker: Raoul Zamponi (University of Macerata & MPI-EVA)
Talk at the Department of Linguistics

Location:
Seminar room U 1.50 (Linguistics/Psychology)

Abstract:
My talk concerns itself with the following three questions. (1) Is the extinct and poorly documented Betoi-Jirara language of the llanos of Orinoco related to the Sáliban languages of the middle Orinoco region? (2) If so, is the relationship genetic, or are the similarities that we may observe by comparing the languages in question attributable to other factors? (3) If the relationship appears to be genetic, how is Betoi-Jirara related to the three (known) members of the Sáliban family? My answers to these questions, discussed in the final part of the talk, are supported by the following evidence: (a) 21 resemblant sets involving lexemes, (b) regular sound-correspondences between such forms, (c) shared morphological and syntactic patterns, (d) some sets of resemblant grammatical morphemes. (Note that only about 150 words of Betoi-Jirara were recorded.)

The structure of metathesis in Amarasi (West Timor)
December 15, 2014 15:00
Speaker: Owen Edwards (ANU Canberra)
Talk at the Department of Linguistics

more information

Location:
Seminar room U 1.50 (Linguistics/Psychology)

Abstract:
Amarasi (Austronesian, West Timor) has a synchronic process of consonant vowel metathesis. In this presentation I describe the structure of metathesis in the noun phrase.

Words have two morphological forms which I label the M-form and the U-form. Which form a noun takes is determined by the syntactic status of any following modifier, as well as the phonological shapes of the noun and modifier. CV metathesis is one of several phonological processes used to derive the U-form and M-form. Depending on the phonological shapes of the noun and modifier, other phonological processes include: vowel assimilation, vowel dissimilation, consonant deletion, apocope and affixation.

I provide a detailed phonetic and phonological account of each of these processes and draw out some important implications of the Amarasi data for our understanding of phonological and morphological theory.
