Abstract:
From a functional perspective prototypical comparative constructions communicate a contrasting, opposite or gradable property or attribute asserted or denied in relation to two distinct participants. The aim of this presentation is three-fold: (i) to explore the strategies that four Uto-Aztecan languages of the Highlands of northwestern Mexico use to encode comparative constructions, (ii) to discuss the paths of grammaticalization that have influenced the emergence of such constructions, and (iii) to evaluate the idea that comparative constructions are not available in all cultures.
