Timothy Mckinnon is a researcher in the linguistics department of MPI-EVA and has worked at the department’s Jakarta Field Station since 2011. He completed his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Delaware in 2011 following a Fulbright Research Fellowship in Indonesia in 2010.
Timothy’s research interests include syntax, phonology, Malayic languages, language description and language documentation. His dissertation investigated the grammatical structure and diachronic origins of Kerinci, a language spoken in Jambi Province, Sumatra. Since completing his dissertation, he has been interested in the historical development, sub-classification, and typological characteristics of Malayic languages.
Timothy is working together with David Gil to develop a typology of phrase-level phonological alternations in Malay and other Indonesian Languages. He is also currently an NSF funded post-doc on a collaborative project between the University of Delaware and MPI EVA. This project, which is supervised by Peter Cole and Gabriella Hermon, focuses on the documentation and description of divergent Malayic varieties spoken in the interior of Sumatra.
