Adam van Casteren

My research is focused on experimental solid biomechanics, I am interested in the physics of the natural environment that animals live in and interact with, developing a greater understanding of how organisms are adapted to, interact and perceive the physical world.

Currently I am researching dental form and function. This research theme encompasses the study of the structure, form and properties of dental hard materials but also concentrates on the mechanics of food items processed by teeth or extra-orally before ingestion. My approach is to combine in-field measurements with lab based research to help quantify the material and structural properties of the environment an organism inhabits and consumes in order to help piece together the evolutionary basis behind adaptation.
