My Ph.D. project focusses on the variation of the skull in domestic dogs, the generation of intraspecific variation and its functional consequences for the feeding process. In my thesis, I also try to explore the concept of modularity as evolutionary mechanism to enhance ‘evolvability’. Here, the covariation of teeth and the surrounding skeletal unit take a central role. For my research, I like to work with a broad repertoire of methods, including motion capture techniques, in-vivo measurements and dissection, 3D-reconstruction and modeling as well as 3D geometric morphometrics. Using the immense intraspecific variation of dogs, my research will lead to new insights into the evolution of the mammalian masticatory apparatus and the evolution of the human skull.
