Research Interest

I am interested in the physiological mechanisms that shape the expression of complex social behaviors and interactions of individuals in an evolutionary context. My research focuses on identifying biomarkers that are correlates of these physiological mechanisms and that can be readily measured in non-invasive samples. The conduct of careful analytical, as well as biological and physiological validation procedures are at the center of my work when evaluating the practicability and feasibility of a biomarker for behavioral research.

Currently I am validating the measurement of oxytocin, a neuropeptide hormone underlying bonding behaviors in mammals, in urine samples of dogs and wolves. This hormone is suggested to be involved in human-dog bonding, and thus its dynamics have possibly been selected for during the domestication of dogs. My work will allow the assessment of its differential role in the intraspecific social interactions in dogs and wolves, and also in interspecific social interactions with humans.
