Research Interests

Reproduction of Mountain gorillas

Current research

My PhD project focuses on hormonal correlates of socio-sexual behaviors in female mountain gorillas. Specifically, we want to understand the variations observed in mating strategies and fertility parameters among female mountain gorillas. By using behavioral and hormonal data, we want to know how well sexual activity falls within the fertile period of a female cycle and access eventually the costs of male aggressions towards females in estrus period.

In the field, we collected simultaneously behavioral data, urine and feces samples from ten parous and seven nulliparous females selected from seven gorillas groups ranging in Parc National des Volcans, Rwanda.  We are currently conducting hormonal measurements in the Endocrinology Laboratory at MPI-EVA, Leipzig.

This project is funded by Max Planck Society, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, The Leakey Foundation and Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst.
