Research & Fieldwork

2010 to date Continuation of management and scientific supervision of long-term projects on bonobo socio-ecology, floral diversity and medicinal plants. Focus on CBD-implementation, conservation of biodiversity, prevalence and control of diseases including self-medication of wild bonobos in the DRCongo. Founding, management and scientific supervision of projects with focus on environmental education and conservation. Co-direction of the LuiKotale Bonobo Project.Candidate for Habilitation (post-doctoral lecture qualification) at LudwigMaximilians University, Munich.
2001 - 2010 Founding, management and scientific supervision of the project „The Cuvette Centrale” as a reservoir of medicinal plants, with focus on investigations of the biodiversity in the central Congo basin. This includes establishment of:
  • International cooperation between research institutions of DR Congo, Belgium and Germany.
  • a laboratory to allow plant extraction and simple phytochemical analyses (TLC) in Kinshasa.
  • a herbarium shared between Brussels, Kinshasa, and eventually Munich University including support of infrastructure & personnel for Kinshasa.
  • a healing garden in proximity to Kinshasa.
  • capacity building.
Funding: Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
Founding and co-direction of research project on bonobo socio-ecology (Pan paniscus) at LuiKotale, DR Congo.
1997 – 2000 Experimental investigations of bonobo dominance behaviour across different German zoos. Conceptual design and tutorial for diploma and master theses; teaching. Funding: University of Munich & Max-Planck-Society (MPG).
1995 – 1997 Continuation of long-term project on bonobo socio-ecology in DR Congo. Research and teaching in Oxford (Ohio), Seewiesen and Munich. Funding: Miami University and Max-Planck-Society (MPG).
1990 – 1995 Founding and co-direction of research project on bonobo socio-ecology (Pan paniscus) at Lomako, DR Congo (then, Zaïre); Work was honoured in 1997 with the research award: "Therese-von-Bayern Preis". Conceptual design and tutorial for diploma and master theses. Funding: Max-Planck-Society (MPG).
1988 - 1990 Research in the frame of the project "Tradition in West African Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)" at Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) (direction: Dr. Ch. & H. Boesch, Univ. of Zurich). Funding: German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) & Leakey Foundation.
