There has been much interest in the number of gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) that compose the population inhabiting the Virunga Massif in Central Africa. Since this number has direct consequences on the conservation guidelines elaborated to protect the population, one major goal of my work is to estimate its abundance through the use of genetic markers. A similar work was recently done for the mountain gorilla population inhabiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Guschanski et al. 2009).
I will also use the acquired genetic information to look at other aspects of the Virunga population, namely the genetic structure and the variance of reproductive success among males throughout paternity analyses.
