Research interests:
I'm interested in the nature of communication, its cognitive prerequisites, and in the continuities and discontinuities that exist between the communicative abilities of non-human great apes, human infants and human adults.
Issues on which I'm currently working include:
- the intentional structure of communication;
- the contrasting motives with which non-human great apes and humans communicate;
- gestural communication;
- linguistic conventions, and the cognitive requirements for participating in them; and
- social learning, including imitation.
I'm a philosopher by training, but also run empirical studies designed to shed light on these issues.
