Postdoc, project on caregiver involvement and children´s learning in early-middle childhood

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology unites scientists with various backgrounds (natural sciences and humanities) whose aim is to investigate the history of humankind from an interdisciplinary perspective with the help of comparative analyses of genes, cultures, cognitive abilities, languages and social systems of past and present human populations as well as those of primates closely related to human beings.

The Department of Human Behavior, Ecology and Culture at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig (Germany) is seeking qualified applicants for a postdoctoral project on caregiver involvement and children’s learning in early-middle childhood.

The overall aim of the project is to understand the relationships between ecological context, cultural models, caregiver involvement, and children’s learning across childhood. The project expands on existing models of cultural variation in autonomy and relatedness development, and seeks to tie involvement and learning to inter- and intra-cultural patterns of socioemotional development and well-being. The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to: collaborate in the design of ethnographically appropriate mixed-methods for use in the field; collect new data at a field site in the Republic of the Congo, co-managed by Dr. Adam Boyette; and contribute to the writing of research reports at all stages and as contributing and lead author, as determined in discussion with Dr. Boyette and all other collaborators. Opportunities to pursue related, independent research topics at the field site are possible and can be discussed.

The contract period is for 3 years, and the appointment is based in Leipzig. The salary is according to the German public service pay scale (TVöD).
