VET OR PATHOLOGIST RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITIONS

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology unites scientists with various backgrounds (natural sciences and humanities) whose aim is to investigate the history of humankind from an interdisciplinary perspective with the help of comparative analyses of genes, cultures, cognitive abilities, languages and social systems of past and present human populations as well as those of primates closely related to human beings.

VET OR PATHOLOGIST RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITIONS
TOPIC: Health, disease and behavior of wild apes

We are searching for qualified vets or pathologists to conduct field work for one year in remote wild ape sites or sanctuaries in several parts of Africa, such as in Loango Chimpanzee Project, Loango National Park, Gabon, or in bonobo field sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Research assistant tasks will include a) health monitoring data collection including regular non-invasive sampling collection of urine and feces; b) regular behavioral data collection and entry, c) occasional autopsies of apes which have died of natural causes.

Candidates should expect living conditions to be remote and basic (no running water, only minimal solar power for electricity, limited internet availability). The typical day will usually involve 10 hours walking in forest, sometimes through swamps, average 10 km per day, rain or shine. The work and living conditions are physically and psychologically demanding.

Qualification and requirements
Veterinarians with an interest in pathology, animal behavior and biology are preferred, but also biologist or medical doctors (or related fields) may apply if experience in pathology can be shown.. The candidate will need to work independently in a remote and physically demanding tropical forest habitat, following a predefined protocol. Good social skills are important to work and live amongst a group of international colleagues with different cultural backgrounds. Similar previous experience will be advantageous.

The successful candidate is fluent in English. Additional languages such as French are useful.

You will be required to have basic health insurance that also covers emergency repatriation and liability. You also must have vaccinations for measles, yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, polio, and meningitis and a negative TB test.

Salary: 250 Euros per month plus 50 Euros for health insurance
One round trip airfare to Africa and transportation to study site will be provided. Accommodation and basic equipment is also provided.
