My research interests center around the evolution of psychological and cognitive mechanisms sustaining large-scale human cooperation and cumulative cultural evolution. I have been investigating the coevolution of punishment, reciprocity, and cooperation by combining laboratory experiments, computational cognitive modeling, and evolutionary game theory. In the last several years, I have also been conducting laboratory experiments and computer simulations for exploring the cognitive mechanisms and institutions sustaining cumulative cultural evolution of technology.
