Research Interests
Geoff Smith is a Palaeolithic zooarchaeologist interested in the evolution of hominin subsistence behaviour. His research focus is on the analysis of animal remains from Palaeolithic sites to investigate taphonomy, site formation and hominin behaviour. He has studied material from sites throughout Europe and from various time slices including some of the earliest sites in Europe (Boxgrove, UK) along with key Neanderthal localities (La Cotte de St Brelade, UK; Neumark-Nord 2, Germany).
He joined the Department of Human Evolution in September 2017 to investigate human subsistence behaviour across the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in Europe. Primarily this will be through a new, up to date analysis of faunal material from the sites of Bacho Kiro (Bulgaria) and Ranis (Germany). His work will analyse and contextualise faunal data from both old collections and new excavations to present a comprehensive history of site formation, assemblage taphonomy and human subsistence behaviour. Results from these new analyses will then be synthesised to investigate human subsistence behaviour at the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition at a broader European scale.
