Research Interests

I am a PhD student in the IMPRS - The Leipzig School of Human Origins at the Department of Human Evolution at the MPI for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.

My general research interests include lithic technology and the Middle Paleolithic. In particular I am interested in correlations between technology and various aspects of human behavior and in questions of how environmental, subsistence or mobility factors influence the organization of lithic technology. My thesis project specifically examines the characterization of Middle Paleolithic industries in the Southern Balkans, their variability, regional and diachronic trends. Themes included are the existence of the so-called Micromousterian and issues related to the production of small artifacts in the Middle Paleolithic, as well as the use of the Levallois reduction system. This research will contribute to an understanding of Middle Paleolithic industrial variability in the Balkans and the lifeways of the last Neanderthals prior to the arrival of modern humans in Europe.

Besides my dissertation research, I have participated in numerous excavations in Serbia, France, and Morocco, and I am currently preparing a survey project in Eastern Serbia aimed at obtaining reliable archaeological sequence for the Upper Pleistocene.
