Research Interests

I am a PhD student in the Department of Human Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. I am interested in dental morphology in fossil hominins, and in particular, the earliest members of the genus Homo.

Teeth are frequently preserved in fossil deposits due to their high level of mineralisation. They also hold a wealth of information about diet, ecology, taxonomy and much more. I use micro-computed tomography to investigate the internal dental structures in an attempt to maximise the amount of information we can gain from fossil teeth.

For my Master’s project at the University of Kent, I worked on the premolar morphology of fossil hominins, aiming to characterise the patterns of variation we see in these highly variable teeth, and link this to important environmental changes across the course of human evolution. My PhD expands on this work to examine internal tooth structures across the dental arcade in Plio-Pleistocene hominins with the goal of addressing outstanding issues in hominin taxonomy, dietary functional morphology and tooth developmental processes.
