Abstract:
Members within a species, exhibit individual variation in their levels of association with conspecifics (i.e., variation in sociality). Dr. Madrid will highlight results from two independent projects studying the development of such variation in sociality in the social-living rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta). On one hand, he will demonstrate that infants experience a gene-by-environment interaction between their 5-HTTLPR genotype and the quality of maternal care received during their first 3 months of life, which influences their eventual juvenile sociality. On the other hand, he will demonstrate that by 3-4 months of age, male infant rhesus macaques show stable trajectories in sociality and that these eventual differences in juvenile sociality are related to differences in oxytocin functioning and social perception.
