Modeling speech dynamics trough recurrences

If we want to obtain a systematic description of a language in the terms of underlying dynamics we need a systematic way to extract information about these dynamics from the speech signals. Our claim here was that an original variant of recurrence analysis, tailored to the specific properties of linguistic behavior (Lancia, Fuchs and Tiede, 2013), offers such a possibility. Our work proceeded in two steps. 1) We adapted the general approach to particular cases (eg. studying the regularity of the behavior of the vocal folds during voicing or the similarity of multivariate articulatory spatiotemporal patterns). 2) We generalized our approach to the study of abstract control structures underlying phonetic features. The final aim of this project was the modeling of the hierarchical relations between the phonetic features in the phonological inventory of a language.
