A journey towards dignity

Restoring the 'Sutherland Nine' to their community

Between 1925 and 1927, the remains of nine San or Khoekhoe people were unethically removed from their graves on Kruisrivier farm, near Sutherland in South Africa, and 'donated' to the University of Cape Town (UCT) without the knowledge or permission of their families. Nearly 100 years later, they are being returned to their community. The process of restitution involved the families' request to learn as much as possible about their ancestors. Thus, a multidisciplinary research team led by Victoria Gibbon, a biological anthropologist at UCT, produced a range of historical, archaeological and analytical studies to document, as far as possible, their lives and deaths. Archaeogeneticists Stephan Schiffels and Joscha Gretzinger of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig contributed to this research.
