Molecular change helps balance nutrition and detoxification in modern humans

A control switch in an enzyme is present in most modern humans, but absent in Neandertals

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology found that around two per cent of modern humans carry a Neandertal-derived version of the NAT1 enzyme, which helps to process folate and to detoxify harmful environmental chemicals. The more common version found in most modern humans includes molecular changes that allow for chemical regulation, reducing enzyme activity and potentially helping to conserve folate during pregnancy.
