TOPIC: Assessment of social cognition and communication capacities in chimpanzees under natural conditions
We are offering a project funded research position for 22 months (1.3.2019 – 31.12.2020) with a possible extension (if project extension application is successful) working on specific aspects of a larger project that examines brain connectomics in hominoids.
Our general interest and focus for this research position is to assess social cognition and communication capacities during development as well as within adult wild chimpanzees and bonobos.
The successful candidate is expected to use observational and experimental approaches, integrated with the analysis of long-term data.
Under the condition that we receive project extension, extensive stays in Africa are expected to collect data on wild chimpanzees and bonobos.
Qualification and requirements
MSc (or comparable degree) in Biology, evolutionary Anthropology or evolutionary Psychology. Good knowledge in evolutionary biology, animal behavior and ecology are crucial for a successful application. Previous observations and detailed behavioural data collection on wild mammals are of advantage. The candidate will need to work independently in a remote and physically demanding tropical forest habitat, following a predefined protocol. Good social skills are important to work and live amongst a group of international colleagues with different cultural backgrounds.
The successful candidate is fluent in English, conversational in French, and has previous experience in field research and team management.
Salary / funding
The candidate will be supported by a German public service salary at a similar level to a PhD student (22 months + potential extension). Although this is not a PhD position, there is the possibility to collect data for a PhD project within the realm of the project.
Start and term of appointment
Starting March 2019, or as soon as possible afterwards. Depending on funding, the anticipated duration of the position will be 3-4 years.
Applications include a cover letter stating research experience, field experience, a detailed curriculum vitae, a short research proposal (2 pages) and the names and e-mail addresses of three referees. The application documents should be sent electronically to email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org. Application deadline is February 1, 2019 or until position is filled thereafter.
