Loango Chimpanzee Project

Directed by Tobias Deschner and Simone Pika

The Loango Chimpanzee Project was founded in 2005 and currently focuses on gaining a better understanding of the behavioural diversity and complexity of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) of the Rekambo community living in a very unique environment in the Loango National Park in Gabon.

The Loango National Park consists of a mosaic of different habitat types varying from marine, coastal lagoons, mangrove swamps, coastal forest, secondary and primary forest and open savannah. It is ecologically very distinctive from other long-term chimpanzee sites thereby providing us with the rare opportunity to enable unique insights into chimpanzees’ behavioural plasticity.

Currently, research teams are able to track and follow all adult males and some adult females of the Rekambo community from early in the morning until late afternoon.
