A couple of studies even show that not only students of an introductory psychology class but also professionals in animal learning and cognition rank dogs and chimpanzees as particularly intelligent animals (Eddy et al., 1993; Rasmussen et al., 1993). Intelligence, however, is a difficult concept to define because it has different meanings. Sometimes intelligence is used as a synonym of creativity and flexibility. Chimpanzees are clearly intelligent by this definition. They use tools, solve problems in various ways, and they can make inferences. Others use intelligence as equivalent to learning ability (Rumbaugh and Pate, 1984). This is extended to trainability in the case of dogs.
