abstract = {{This chapter aims to help readers prepare for going to {\textquoteleft}the field{\textquoteright}{\textemdash}{\textless}br{\textgreater}the location(s) where data will be collected. We discuss starting {\textless}br{\textgreater}a new field site, collaborating at established sites, and practical {\textless}br{\textgreater}strategies for building and maintaining ties to the field site {\textless}br{\textgreater}longitudinally. Throughout, we emphasize that developing trusting {\textless}br{\textgreater}relationships with the community is critical to ethical research {\textless}br{\textgreater}practice and essential for good science. Starting from this principle, {\textless}br{\textgreater}we review the practical strategies for relationship-building and {\textless}br{\textgreater}establishing ethical research practices, especially in regard to {\textless}br{\textgreater}work with children and in settings with little to no infrastructure {\textless}br{\textgreater}for research oversight. Also, personal experiences and practical {\textless}br{\textgreater}aspects of conducting research are presented, including: obtaining {\textless}br{\textgreater}permissions to conduct research with {\textquoteleft}human subjects{\textquoteright}, developing {\textless}br{\textgreater}rigorous consent procedures, writing codes of conduct for research {\textless}br{\textgreater}staff, data storage and access concerns, staying safe and healthy in {\textless}br{\textgreater}the field, and designing comprehensive and ethical budgets.{\textless}br{\textgreater}}},
