  Conservation  
     
  The project contributes both directly and indirectly to the conservation of the Salonga National Park in general and the SW-part including the populated fringe areas in particular. This is done by:  
     
 
  • Continuous presence of researchers
  • Acquisition of knowledge on flora & fauna essential for the implementation of conservation plans
  • Conservation of traditional knowledge
  • Transfer of traditional knowledge to the younger generation
  • Sensitisation concerning harvesting techniques
  • Investigation of potential sustainable use
  • Assimilation of former hunters into the project
  • Improvement of the local socio-economy such as
    • Employment of local villagers
    • Buying of local products for food supply
  • Acquisition of additional projects such as
    • Set-up for a local tailor-NGO in the villages outside the SW park-fringe (financial support: German embassy Kinshasa)
    • Evaluation biodiversity & commercial potential of aquarium fishes (financial support: GTZ)
    • Evaluation of Land-Cover & Use of the SNP (financial support: GTZ)
    • Reconstruction of a local primary school at Lompole (financial support: German embassy Kinshasa)
