  In 1999, the ministry for education and research (BMBF) (http://www.bmbf.de/) invited project applications for a new interdisciplinary program with focus on biodiversity and global change (BIOLOG) in Africa (http://www.biolog-online.info/).

The project, ”The Cuvette Centrale as reservoir of medicinal plants”, was accepted as part of this program.

It started in 2001, with the establishment of personnel and infrastructural foundations in Kinshasa and Salonga National Park. Since 2002, the field site LuiKotal, in the SW of SNP, is continuously operating.
