The largest protected area is the Salonga National Park in the centre of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

With its 36.000 km², this park contains a vast array of different types of vegetation and is the only designated area of protection for the endemic fauna and flora of the lowland basin. It is administered by the national conservation authority, the: Institut Congolaise pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN).
