I will present the findings from a series of recent studies conducted in collaboration with Warneken, Blake, McAuliffe and Corbit. In these studies we contrasted 4- to 15-year-old children’s aversion to inequity across 7 cultures and 3- to 8-year-olds' tendency to follow a parental model of sharing in 2 cultures. Very recent work demonstrating that prior collaboration positively impacts aversion to inequity in a sample that had previously not demonstrated inequity aversion will be shared, along with insights gained from an assessment of older child and adult norms in this setting. The implications of these, and other, cultural developmental findings for accounts of early prosocial development will be discussed.
