Abstract: Minor modifications during development can have important effects on the overall brain structure and physiology. Thus mutations in “developmental genes” or in their regulatory elements are of interest to understand how the brain has evolved, the human brain in particular. Our laboratory has discovered a novel property of homeoprotein transcription factors, namely their ability to be transported between cells and to behave not only as cell autonomous developmental regulators but also as non-cell autonomous morphogens. We shall expose and discuss how this non-cell autonomous activity is involved in progenitor division/migration/differentiation, the formation of boundaries at early stages of brain development, axon guidance and the biological activity of inhibitory interneurons in the cerebral cortex.
