Ph.D. Student Positions in Human Origins (International Max Planck Research School)

We invite applications for the
Leipzig School of Human Origins
(www.leipzig-school.eva.mpg.de),
an international PhD program of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and Leipzig University.

The program provides interdisciplinary training and research opportunities for university graduates who wish to work towards a PhD in the areas anthropology, human behavioral ecology, psychology, and related fields. Candidates may apply to the following departments and research groups at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI EVA) or Leipzig University (LU):

  • Comparative Cultural Psychology, MPI EVA (Director: Prof. Daniel Haun)
  • Human Behavior, Ecology and Culture, MPI EVA (Director: Prof. Richard McElreath)
  • Max Planck Research Group “The Cultural Evolution of Reproduction”, MPI EVA (Dr. Heidi Colleran)
  • Behavioral Ecology, LU (Director: Prof. Anja Widdig)

Graduate students will be accepted to one of these departments or research groups but will have the opportunity to get training in all research fields pursued at the MPI EVA. The PhD program is open for international students and it normally takes three to four years to finish one’s PhD.

Applicants are expected to hold a Master’s degree, a Diploma or equivalent in one of the above, or related, fields. While it is not necessary to hold the degree at the time of application, successful candidates must have been awarded their degree by the time they start their studies in Leipzig. Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement. German language skills are not mandatory but international students may participate in German language courses offered by the MPI EVA.

PhD students are normally paid by the MPI EVA (comparable to 50% Pay Group 13 of TVöD), by Leipzig University, or by third-party funding.

The Max Planck Society and Leipzig University are committed to increasing diversity in their workforce and therefore encourage applications from individuals from underrepresented groups and diverse backgrounds.

Deadline for applications for 2020 is 2 December 2019.
